The Breastfeeding Support Service (BSS) supports breastfeeding women in NHS Lanarkshire. The Service provides additional support to breastfeeding women; however this will not replace current support given to women by health professionals.
The Service is based in Wishaw General Hospital and is staffed by Breastfeeding Support Service Assistants, who are coordinated by a Breastfeeding Service Coordinator and managed by the Infant Feeding Development Midwife.
All women being transferred home from the Maternity Unit in Wishaw General Hospital and who are breastfeeding for the first time or who are experiencing challenges will receive support from the BSS automatically. This visit will take place on the day after the community midwife’s first visit or sooner if identified on transfer home.
All women transferred home who have previously breastfed and women who have received support from the BSS at home will be offered support from a Community Mothers volunteer.
The service will accept reactive referrals from midwives, public health nurses and GP’s for breastfeeding women who require additional support at any stage of their breastfeeding journey.
The BSS can be contacted on tel. 01698 366710 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)
Women who deliver out with the Maternity Unit at Wishaw General Hospital and receive their midwifery care from NHS Lanarkshire midwives will have access to the above service
